Testing Your Car's Battery

If you have any doubt about whether your battery is in good shape, you should definitely check its charge before any major road trip or if you are anticipating traveling in bad weather conditions. You can test your battery's charge at home with these easy steps.

You will need a voltmeter to measure the charge. Turn your car's ignition and all the lights off. Hook up the red voltmeter test lead to the positive battery terminal. Put the black voltmeter test lead on the battery's negative terminal. Check the reading to see if you have a voltage of at least 12.4 and a charge of 75 percent or higher. Anything below these levels means that you need to consider replacing your battery. You should also do so if your battery is more than five years old.
